Tsubame
The TSUBAME satellite project is the fourth satellite project undertaken by the Laboratory for Space Systems (LSS) at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. TSUBAME follows on from its three predecesor CubeSat-class satellites, CUTE-I, Cute-1.7 + APD, and Cute-1.7 + APD II. Following the launch of the LSS’s third satellite, Cute-1.7 + APD II, the TSUBAME project was initialised and is currently in the BBM (Bread Board Model) development phase.
The Laboratory for Space Systems is responsible for the overall running of the project, development, test, launch and operation as well as for the specific development of the satellite bus system. The scientific sensor equipment installed was developed by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Kawai Laboratory. The installation of such equipment in this 45cm x 45cm x 45 cm micro-satellite demonstrates the application of the LSS’s satellite bus for various mission types.
An application has been made for the TSUBAME satellite to be launched via a H-IIA piggyback launch window provided by JAXA under the selection criteria (priority A). The launch is planned for either 2011 or 2012.
